Avanos has a schizophreniac identity as a city.
The river of Kızılırmak creates a divide in the city, both physically and in the way of living. The North side of the city exhibits the historical and natural character underlying the cappadocian region. The south side on the other hand has evolved under a mediocre architectural planning. The south side of the city is identified with rectangular lots and roads that intersect each other at right angles as a consequence of settling on flat ground.

This dementia of Avanos lies ahead of us as it has also been mentioned by the authorities. 4 bridges with different uses establish connections throughout the region. The current situation however shows that these efforts of “connection” hasn’t been successful.
With the new bridge, the issue of “connection” will be overcome not only by its use as a vehicle road but also by imposing on it different uses and and by creating an identity in the bridge image.
A popular method nowadays to attract attention is to create a visually “new” bridge. Avanos, especially the historic Avanos however, is a world renowned city thanks to its identity and image.
For us, the goal is not to design a bridge that will serve as an icon but to design one which will not be in a race with the city identity, a bridge with an image consciously chosen to resemble “NOTHING”…
